Facelift surgery is a cosmetic facial surgery which helps in the removal of extra and sagging skin from the face of a person. It also helps in tightening loose muscles and hides the signs of ageing. The technical term for a facelift is rhytidectomy. Facelifts are often combined with other surgeries like eyelid surgery or forehead lift, chemical peel for removing scars and removal of excessive cheek fat. It is better to search for an experienced surgeon before undergoing this operation and also to know the costs involved. After the surgery, it is advised to take rest for about a couple of weeks.
Procedure of facelift
The facelift surgery is performed by creating an incision or cut in front of the ear and continuing it till near the hairline. The other end of the cut is extended behind the ear till the hairline on the back of the neck is reached. Following this incision, the skin along with fatty tissues, is then lifted and separated from the deeper tissues. The skin is then pulled and tightened and excess skin and fat is removed. After this step, the skin can be reattached using skin staples. The amount of skin removed should be left on the judgment of the surgeon. This decision is influenced by his experience of work. After the facelift surgery is complete, the patient should take enough rest. For scars to completely heal, the time of about two weeks is necessary, but some patients may even recover within five to six days.
Pros and cons of facelift
As already discussed, a facelift is a very fine surgical procedure which would help in removing ugly scars or ageing signs. It can lift sagging skins, tighten the skin and hide scars. In a nutshell, we may say that it enhances the overall appearance of a person. However, facelift also has some risk involved. Infection can certainly spread if the incision is not done with precaution. Also, the patient might feel some pain during the recovery process. The skin would also be quite tender and may have some swelling after the surgery and hence, all forms of strenuous activity would have to be avoided completely.
